I don't need Jesus to be a loving person
by Fester inwanted to start a new topic, one based on the idea of those of us who are naturally loving, naturally kind, and naturally good people, without the bible or without anyone else telling us otherwise.. it wasn't long after i found out that the majority of the religious history i studied was a dead end road that i also discovered that i can be a friendly happy person, living a perfect life (in my mind which is good enough for me), not a thief, not a killer, paying my taxes and steering clear of everyone out here with an agenda.... i started this thread for those of us who are truly free and truly open minded, who have no religious crutch whatsoever.. if you're among that group or lack thereof i should say, welcome to the thread!.
..... now some unloving words from jesus and the bible to back this belief....... .
luk 14:26 "if anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

Fester: I started this thread for those of us who are truly free and truly open minded, who have no religious crutch whatsoever.
Your questions to Christians indicate that you are not really open minded but have definite views on religion. By claiming to be a Deist you are not truly free or open minded. The advantage is that you have nothing definite to discuss or defend.
This could be why you question and just ask people with religious views to defend their faith. You appear to be smug in the knowledge that you cannot be questioned yourself because you are neither an atheist or a Christian. I suspect that until you have defined what you really believe you will remain in limbo.

This thread has gone awfully quiet. Perhaps the news was not so good but just a different angle on an age old concept?

My daughter asked me this today.
by thenoblelodge inshe asked me why god didn't step in to stop tragedies.
for example, recently twin baby girls were attacked in their cots while their parents were down stairs.
both suffered life changing injuries.. my daughter knows a couple who have waited years for a baby and eventually had i.v.f.

I would never worship the OT God again.
A lot of people find the Over the Top God too much to stomach.
Why not try the softly spoken son Jesus? He might even turn some water into wine for you.

Once we believe in the concept of God we take on certain obligations towards Him. We then have an expectation that he has obligations towards us. This is how relationships work. In an attempt to understand what our obligations are we ask questions. The answers often fail to make sense. They leave the questioner unsatisfied and short changed.
They search the pages of the bible in the hope the answer will be found there. Jesus' miracles seem like half a loaf and something fishy. More contradictions are found, so the bible is closed and put aside, apart from a few carefully selected texts.
At this point the seeker of truth is told that God's ways are unknowable; too far above us; unreachable; a divine mystery. Porky Pie in the sky perhaps?

Deism is still belief in God the creator. Just a lazy God who sits on his throne and does nothing.
He or It expects us to be moral but does not explain what morals are. No Holy writings. No prophets. No churches. It has thrown out all the details that caused other religions to contradict themselves.
It is the the same old company, re-badged and sold under a new name. Deism has cut out the middle men. It's like buying on line and pretending we are not shoppers.
Deism is a spider that has had some of its legs pulled of.

...not a killer, paying my taxes...
Unfortunately, however kind you personally are, we are part of a system that we endorse to to act on our behalf.
A large proportion of your taxes are spent sending soldiers to kill on your behalf. Occasionally this may be done to protect you but in many cases it is part of a world power struggle.

Question for Tec
by Fester inhi tec,.
i'd like to publicly ask you about a few things.
i notice in a lot of your posts you talk about your "faith".. can you define exactly what "faith" is though?
-
THE GLADIATOR
FAITH can be a secular thing. Many atheists are humanists. Some people believe in the Carl Rodgers approach, that humans are basically good.
That give time and the right environment they will be decent and kind. They have FAITH that things will work out and the world of mankind will gradually improve and prosper, living by higher and higher ideals.
In short they have FAITH in the human race. Unfortunately life has made me doubtful as to whether the majority of humans hold such noble intentions.

this is not very scientific......does anyone believe this is how languages got started???

A few years ago I started tearing all the pages that I didn't believe out of my bible.
Now I don't know what to do with the cover.

If the bible is god's handbook for man, why is it such gobbledegook?
by Aussie Oz ini don't mean the basic moral code of behavior (that many non biblical lands also just happen to have) that people use to model their lives, but the 'deeper' stuff.... assuming that god has had his divine plan for vindicating himself etc ever since he figured that adam may screw up, and he needed to let faithful mankind know the 'plan' and how to survive it all.... why is the important stuff all gobbledegook?.
the time frame, prophecy, signs and so on are all so obscure that even the cleverest theologians can't understand it or agree on it.
the 'truth' is so muddled and juggled up that every understanding can be logically challenged with an equally challengable one.

Tammy: Since doing so, I started acknowledging and then removing the hypocrisy that I found in myself. I started caring about all others (not just the ones who were of benefit to me, or part of my close circle)
Thanks for your detailed reply. As I said before, I don't doubt that you are a kind person and were before you became a Christian.
You are a better person than me. I am aware of the the hypocrisy in myself but it suits me to hold on to it!
